Middle East Trip 2003: Syria | Lebanon | Jordan | Palestine The Palestinian-Israeli conflict Travelogue
Day 07 - Aleppo
26-09-2003
The initial plan for the day is to be calm and with hot weather. We began with a visit to a cibercafe near the hotel, where we record two CD's with all the photos we had taken during the first days of the travel. We began the itinerary around the christian quarter Al Jdeida, where the hotel is placed. There are a lot of wooden balconies and thin streets whit a shops of handmade products.

We crossed the Sharia Bab Al-Faraj square and its Closk Tower where we saw a cinema when were shown asiatic and occidental films. Next, we went to the souq and the mosque where we saw that friday isn't the best day to sightseeing. Almost all is closed and is a burning weather. The souq is a little narrower than Damascus souq, with some streets closed with grilles. Only some shops are opened, probably because the owners are christians. We made the most of this situation, buying two pieces of the famous Aleppo soap and a little bag of curry, which intense smell came with us the rest of the travel.

When we went to the citadel, we found with something like a festival with music and traditional dances (and no so traditional) made by girls, with occidental clothes. The beauty of the citadel and the amazing stairs are impressive.

In view of the heat, we went to have luch and take a rest in the hotel. During the evening we visited the traditional Baron Hotel, we were hosted a lot of great personalities during the beginings of the 20th century where the Orient Express finnished its trip in Aleppo. Clearly, the hotel was better moments and we were glad for not to chose it instead the ours. The waiter shown us the bill signatured by T.E. Lawrence. During the returning to the hotel we shown something that never ceased to amuse us, the local custom of the men to sahke the hand with other man, like a symbol of friendship. Close to the hotel the nocturnal photo of a coptic church.
